Calculate the area of a rectangle

Type the rectangle's length and width into the boxes, and the calculator works out the area straight away. You can use either a comma or a full stop for decimals, like 4.5.

What is the area of a rectangle?

The area is how much space the rectangle takes up. The length ll is one side, and the width ww is the other side, at a right angle to the length.

The formula is:

A=lβ‹…wA = l \cdot w

You multiply the two sides by each other. Think of it as small 1 by 1 squares: each row holds ll squares, and there are ww rows in total. That is why the area is lβ‹…wl \cdot w.

Example

A rectangle has length l=7l = 7 and width w=3w = 3. The area is:

A=lβ‹…w=7β‹…3=21A = l \cdot w = 7 \cdot 3 = 21

So the area is 2121 unitsΒ².
