Calculate the area of a triangle

Type the triangle's base and height into the boxes, and the calculator works out the area straight away. You can use either a comma or a full stop for decimals, like 4.5.

What is the area of a triangle?

The area is how much space the triangle takes up. The base bb is the side the triangle stands on, and the height hh is the distance from the base straight up to the top corner.

The formula is:

A=12⋅b⋅hA = \frac{1}{2} \cdot b \cdot h

You multiply the base by the height and take half. The reason is that a triangle is exactly half of a rectangle with the same base and height. The rectangle's area is b⋅hb \cdot h, so the triangle's area is half of that.

Example

A triangle has base b=6b = 6 and height h=4h = 4. The area is:

A=12⋅b⋅h=12⋅6⋅4=12A = \frac{1}{2} \cdot b \cdot h = \frac{1}{2} \cdot 6 \cdot 4 = 12

So the area is 1212 units².
